In a nutshell, in this discussion, youwill be practicing using quality sources when you research.
1. Before You Post: Find and Evaluate Two Sources/Articles
First, you must carefully read the Evaluating Sources PowerPoint.
Then, think of a healthcare-related topic that interests you (perhaps an illness, a disease, or a treatment for such).
Read up on that topic first by “just Googling” it (use any general web search engine you wish).
Write down the proper APA full text citation for it.
While reading it, use the CRAAP test to determine its reliability and suitability—jot notes down about that.
Next, research that same topic by using our Library database to access CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature).

Need help finding CINAHL? The library database can be accessed in Sakai by clicking the Library link in the left navigation. It’s found on the eJournal Databases tab there.
You can also click on the link below (or type in the URL) to go to the library’s CINAHL search page directly. https://hondros.libguides.com/home/SearchingCINAHL.
Once you’ve done this, you’ll see the box below; click on the blue CINAHL link. This will put you into the CINAHL database.
When you see the search screen like the one below, type your topic in the search box (I’ve typed in “melanoma treatment options”). Then click on the green Search box.
NOTE: It’s important to use key words and not a question or sentence like a Google search; it will be more effective with a few major words.
You’ll see a screen similar to the one below. Click on the PDF Full Text linkbelow the article you’re interested in seeing.
To get the APA style reference for the article, click on this icon/picture on the very right edge of the screen. Scroll down the list of Citation formats to find the APA one and copy and paste it as needed in your homework.
NOTE: Please double check that the title capitalization is correct; sometimes it is not. The first word in the title and subtitle (after a colon) should be capitalized along with any proper nouns.
This should help you find what you need.
2. Initial Post
For your initial post,
Explain what topic you chose, and why you chose it.
Then, share the APA Style references for each of the two sources you found.
Under each source:
Tell what kind of online search you used to find each one, and
Evaluate the sources using the CRAAP test: is one source more reliable and suitable than the other? Why or why not? *
*Evaluating and comparing the two sources is at the heart of what the exercise is asking you to do, so pay careful attention to it. Our librarian, Beth Smith, can be contacted if you need help with this exercise or with the Library database. .
When?
How long must it be? It must be at least 250 words long.
How do you actually do the “post”?
Click Start a New Conversation , and enter the title and content of your post in the appropriate boxes. Click Post when you are ready to submit.
A good idea is to type it in Microsoft Word first, and save it to your computer, and then copy and paste the text into Sakai. This way, you reduce the chance of losing your work in the rare case of a technical issue. Please do not submit the post as an attachment.
3. Reply
Reply to at least two of your classmates.
When? By 11:55pm Sunday of this week.
How many classmates do I need to reply to? You have to do at least two, but please feel free to do more!
How long must each reply be? Each reply must be at least 100 words long.
What should I say? You may wish to discuss any similar findings you had regarding one source being more trustworthy than the other, what you might do differently when searching for sources to use in your college writing, or what was surprising to you in this process. You may also wish to comment on the students’ choice of topics and anything you might have in common or anything you have to offer regarding it.
