750 WORDS not 825 You will be given a recent article from a textile magazine. Your task is to write about it, and thus show that you understand both what it says, and why. Imagine: you are in your first job and your boss is an accountant. She tosses you a magazine and says “Tell me about this article” Some of the words that might describe what you are doing include: Interpret, Explain, Describe, Comment, Summarize, Critique, Abstract, Analyze. As well as indicating what the paper actually describes/discusses (at a level appropriate for a non-expert) you should also consider these questions: Who are the authors? What is their job? Who do they work for? What else have they written? Why did the authors write this? (The article itself may not give he answer directly. It may depend on who they work for.) What magazine did it appear in? What kind of publication is it? Who reads that? Who publishes it? Why do they publish it? Why did the authors publish it in that magazine? Who are they writing it for? What is the intended audience? Is it promotional? Is it trustworthy? Is it likely to make a difference? Where did they get their information? Did they do experiments? Did they read other people’s research? Did they contact knowledgeable people? Did they read promotional literature from companies trying to sell something?
