Choosing a topic: To choose a topic, you could start with an immunology related disease (hypersensitivity (allergy), autoimmune disorder or an infection (i.e. coronavirus) and find a paper that discusses research on an immunological aspect of the disease/infection.  Alternatively, you could peruse journals specifically related to immunology (such as Journal of Immunology, Immunology, Nature Immunology, Infection and Immunity, Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology, Cancer Immunology/Immunotherapy, etc.) to find a recent article on a topic that interests you. You may have to access these by logging in to the Alvin Sherman Library. Find a paper that you can understand and is related to material covered in class. Your best bet is to find a paper that relates to your future career (dental, pharmacy, optometry, MD/DO, etc.) Selection of a journal article You will be selecting a recent (within the past 5 years) primary research article from a peer-reviewed journal that focuses on a topic related to what was discussed in the immunology course. It CANNOT be a review article (it should have a methods section).  No credit will be given to a review of a review! Therefore, email me a pdf of the article to get it approved approved BEFORE you write your article review. Use Pubmed or Google Scholars to search for your paper. Format 3 pages, typed, double-spaced, font 12 point, 1 inch margins Should also include references (at least 4, one should be the article that you are reviewing and one can be your textbook). Papers without in-text citations/references page will not be accepted. Content: The article review should be written in a “Scientific American” style (i.e. layman’s terms) so that the general public can understand. It should contain the following: I. Title: Should NOT be the same as the article you are reviewing. Should be creative. II. Hook/Introduction to the topic •Include a “Hook” – an intro that will make the reader want to keep reading the rest of the article. •Provide general background information about the topic, enough for the reader to understand what the scientific paper you are going to reviewing is about. •Use additional resources (i.e. textbook, other journal articles). III. Explanation of why the study was done •Credit the authors: Include who is doing the study, where and why? •State the purpose of the study. This should be paraphrased from that of the author.  If you plagiarize you will fail the assignment and you may fail the course and be involved in a case of academic misconduct. BE very careful NOT to plagiarize!!!!!  The purpose statement is typically found towards the end of the Introduction section of the paper.  In some cases, you may have to infer the purpose of the study from the discussion and conclusions sections. IV. Methods used •A brief description of the methods or approach the author(s) used to address the problem IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Your explanation of the methods should demonstrate that you understand what was being done in the research.  •Do not lump all of the methods together in one section. It should be in chronological order – method of what they did first, then the result; method of what they did next and then the results. •You will not need to include all methods, just the ones for the results that you are focusing on. V. Results obtained and major conclusions •A description IN YOUR OWN WORDS of what you believe to be the most important results/conclusion of the paper.  You do not have to explain each result for each figure/experiment, just highlight the most important ones.  •Do not include the actual figures in your paper. •You should include an explanation of why it is important. This must be in your own words!  Simply paraphrasing or quoting the authors here is NOT ACCEPTABLE and will result in a poor grade on the assignment!  •Make sure you understand what was done in the research and what it means, how it relates to a bigger picture. If you need help with this, ask! VI. Future experiments planned •How can this knowledge be used in the future? •Did the research lead to additional questions about the topic that need to be answered? •What is the next step? VII. References •Should include in-text citations AND a references section. •Be sure to include the reference for the paper you are reviewing and any other sources used. •You should have at least 4 references. Tips: •THIS IS NOT A LAB REPORT!!! Even though I described what needs to be included that way, your paper should NOT have headings such as “methods” and should not be formatted with all the methods together and all of the results together. Instead, it should tell a story. •Your summary must stand on its own. – Do not refer to Figures or Tables from the paper. •Do not use excessive scientific jargon. Use analogies to explain difficult concepts. •Look up and read sample “Scientific American” articles to get an idea of what the style should be like.
