Project/Context: As a regular Twitter user, from a personal viewpoint the information retrieval is not optimized for the user as it does not provide relevant information based on geographical metadata and this is what this research will explore. What the project is about: A ranking news feed feature based on which provides the Twitter user with local news based on the user’s geographical metadata. ? The web app will make use of an API of your choice to retrieve the User’s geographical location coordinates and use this to generate a news feed section on the page based on the geographical coordinates of the User which will use a ranking algorithmic system to provide the User with news content happening in their local area in real-time data Client, Audience and Motivation: The main client for this research will be programmers, developers and users who find the experience of information retrieval on Twitter not optimally suited to their geographical metadata. By the time primary research has been conducted, the target audience for this research could be more specified to be programmers/developers with technical knowledge of how ranking algorithms can be used to better optimise information retrieval based on geographical metadata. Information gained from primary research findings could be used to aid other developers/programmers in building better social media applications like Twitter Primary Research Plan: The premise of this project is based on the personal notion that from the perspective of a regular Twitter user is that the information retrieved in the user’s feed can be optimised further based on the ranking algorithm for this popular social media application – finding if there are other programmers who share this idea will be essential to this research. This would aid in bringing to light if there is a viable and practical use for this tool and the possibility of this being implemented in the course of time. The approach to this primary research was by making use of a non-observed survey that requested for the opinions on the suggestion for this tool and a couple of general questions to get the general consensus of the participants in this research. This will help to determine if there is a practical use for this in not just Twitter as a social media tool but other well known applications such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook. Drawing from a wide variety of developers and programmers with a range of various expertise and experience is important to the research but not just using students at University. Due to this primary research being undertaken during the pandemic (COVID-19) and restrictions in place that would not allow for face to face interaction, Microsoft Teams, ZOOM and Reddit was used to interview developers, programmers and regular users of Twitter. Reddit is a useful tool that can be used in this research for communicating with a community of programmers/developers who write code for the social media systems similar to Twitter. Microsoft Teams and ZOOM are a good way to interview programmers/developers and which can be used to gain insight into a good scope of data and feedback. Posting a survey in a subreddit in the computer science programming community for developer-focused content will result in a worthy number of responses to provide feasible Data.
