Fungal fatty acids from the Porcupine Abyssal Plain DNA-based surveys have revealed the diversity of the marine fungi. However, despite emerging evidence of their ecological importance our understanding of the functional roles of fungi in marine ecosystems remains limited (Grossart et al., 2019). Though DNA-based surveys are important for quantitative descriptions of marine fungal distributions, they tell us little about fungal activity in situ. Marine fungi may play an important role in marine carbon cycling. Fungal fatty acids can serve as markers for fungal activity (Olsson et al. 2003, Taube et al. 2019) . Here, we will investigate the presence of fungi by the use of their characteristic lipids C18:1w9 and C18:2w6,9 in filtered and extracted water from the Porcupine Abyssal Plain Sustained Observatory (PAP-SO) where also an internal standard (C19:0) was added. The water column was sampled from 8-4780m and the phospholipid fatty acid contents of filtered water were extracted and analysed.
