1968- Was it the worst year in US history?

From the continued failing effort to win the war in Vietnam and Lyndon Johnson’s announcement that he would not seek a second full term, to the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. & Robert F. Kennedy, and then the unprecedented violence seen at the Democratic National Convention, the year was marked by mounting tragedy and a growing feeling that America was headed for a fall. Amazingly, these weren’t the only events that rocked the nation as the major social movements of the era exploded across almost every state, bringing violence, outrage, and unrest to hundreds of cities and towns. In the end, the year saw one of the largest shifts in political power ever witnessed in an election year, marking the return of the Republican Party and the simultaneous destruction of the Democrats.
