Assignment Assignment helpIntroduction and Goals Today we will be using the Tracker software to analyze projectile motion, which necessarily involves motion in at least two dimensions. In the video, a ball is tossed and undergoes projectile motion. There will be a landmark we can use from the video for scale, and it is in fact one meter in height. For the video, available on Canvas, you will download, open, and analyze using tracker. Today, however, we will introduce new features, such as the ability to use physics models to simulate models of motion. This will come in handy later in the semester when discussing air resistance, friction, or more complex models of motion. For the video today our goal is to: Find an equation to describe the position as a function of time and generate a plot of the data (for both ???? and ???? positions). Find an equation to describe the velocity as a function of time and generate a plot of the data (for both ???? and ???? components). Analyze the mathematical equation that describes the motion shown in the video. Compare the motion to three models: A linear motion in the x direction model. A linear motion in the x direction with “impetus.” A two-dimensional model, using the acceleration due to gravity. Before starting the lab activity, make sure to review the material for this lab on Canvas. Analysis Each week we will have some analysis of the data we collect. As the semester goes on, this analysis will become increasingly open ended. Follow the analysis steps, if any, and then answer the questions as part of your lab report. Describe the spacing of the points in both the Linear and Impetus models. What does the spacing tell you about the velocity and acceleration of the object in each model? Which model agrees better with the actual horizontal motion of the ball? Briefly explain. Two students are discussing their answers to the previous questions. Student 1: Based on my answers, it seems once an object is moving, it’ll keep moving on its own without anything pushing or pulling on it. Student 2: I disagree. My car slows down if I don’t keep giving it gas. To keep an object moving something has to push or pull on it. Do you agree or disagree with either or both of the students? Explain your reasoning. In the Projectile Model, the object moves both vertically and horizontally. By comparing it to the Linear Model, describe the effect the object’s vertical motion has on its horizontal motion. Compare the prediction of the Projectile Model with the actual motion of the ball. Does the model seem to qualitatively describe how an actual projectile moves? Briefly explain. Look at your best fit curves for motion in the vertical direction. Determine the vertical component of acceleration from the ????-vs.-???? graph and from the ????????-vs.-???? graph. Calculate the relative percent error between these two values, and also compare each to the “true” value of 9.81 m/s2.
